Demonstrators
in the Philippines Demand Release of Cuban Five
Havana, Sept 16, (RHC).-
Cuba solidarity groups in the Philippines
recently staged a march in Manila urging the
U.S. government to immediately release the five
Cuban anti-terrorist fighters unjustly
imprisoned in the United States since 1998.
There was a big turnout despite unfavorable
weather conditions due to the proximity of
typhoon Nando, and the fact that march
organizers did not get permission to carry out
such a demonstration.
The protest was organized by the Cuba-Philippine
Friendship Society, which includes two
committees for the liberation of the Cuban Five.
The
activists picketed in front of the U.S. Embassy
in Manila, where they delivered a letter
addressed to U.S. President Barack Obama stating
their demand to free the five Cubans held in
U.S. prisons. The letter was signed by more than
2,000 people who support
the Cuban Five.
With
the objective of raising awareness about the
cause of Cuban Five, the Society sent messages
to the Alliance of the Coordillera’s People (an
organization that groups all the indigenous
peoples of the Philippines), to the Patriotic
Workers’ Movement and the National Association
of Builders and Allied Industries, among other
local organizations.
