Havana.- Just recently, Olympic and world champion Cuban boxer Teofilo Stevenson (Las Tunas, 1952) was rumoured to be gravely ill and dying due to a liver condition.
But fortunately, there's no truth whatsoever to the Teofilo on deathbed rumors. And Teofilo himself took care of getting things clear. "It is true that I was in the hospital for a couple of weeks after a routine examination revealed I had blood clots in the artery close to the heart. So they put me under emergency treatment to dissolve the clots before they could get any worse. But I'm fine already," said Stevenson.
Stevenson was discharged last week from the Medical and Surgical Research Center (CIMEQ) in Havana. A three-time Olympic champion (1972, 1976 and 1980) and three-times world champion (1974, 1978 and 1988), Teofilo Stevenson spoke about his recovery plan for the next few weeks, which includes exercising and walking regularly. He said he expects to go back to work at the Cuban Boxing Federation very soon.
Admired and loved by everyone due to his charismatic personality and his accomplishments on the ring─ he won 301 of 321 fights over two decades ─Teofilo Stevenson thanked friends, fans and the Cuban people in general for their support and for the letters of encouragement he received over his health problem. To conclude, he made light of the death rumors being spread by anti-Cuba media: "Just imagine, they thought I was already finished!
