Memorial “26 de Julio”
By Iris Hernández Rodríguez
The fact that Movimiento 26 de Julio ( 26-of -July Movement ) had numerous followers across the island is common knowledge. Las Tunas City was not an exception. Its action was also felt in this region, where courageous adults and youths fought to overturn the opprobrious regime.
The place chosen by the local revolutionaries to found the political organization was the storehouse of Pinilla Rum in Las Tunas. In the course of time, the location became a grocery store, but in 1995 it was turned into a museum to honor the protagonists of those glorious happenings.
The collections of documents and weapons prove the active participation of some revolutionary cells in this eastern region. Many patriotic ceremonies, organized by the Association of Combatants of the Cuban Revolution are held here.
