Federation of Cuban Women Urges UN to Complete Promises Agreed in Beijing

Havana, March 2, (RHC).- Cuba has urged the United Nations (UN) to fully comply with official development aid commitments agreed at the 4th World Conference on Women, held in Beijing 15 years ago.

Yolanda Ferrer Gomez, General Secretary of the Federation of Cuban Women (FMC) stated that it is essential to wipe out poverty, illiteracy and inequalities of the world.

The developed countries' promise to contribute 0.7 percent of their Gross Domestic Product remains a pending task and "a shame to those who, ignoring the just aspirations and needs of our impoverished countries, got rich by plunder and exploitation," she said.

Ferrer was speaking at the 54th session of the UN Commission on the Legal and Social Status of Women and highlighted the need of a lasting peace and a sustainable, fair development.

“There won’t be any substantial advance or effective benefit for women unless environmental preservation, peace and respect for all is a reality”, added Ferrer, who is also member of the Cuban Council of State.
