Power Being Restored Throughout Cuba

Havana, Oct 5.- In the aftermath of Hurricanes Gustav and Ike, not a day goes by that more people have electricity restored to their communities.

The island's electricity company explained that they have had to resort to the continuous use of power generators that have not been designed to work such long hours, but that have helped alleviate the situation in many parts of the country. Moreover, this has meant an additional fuel cost of 46 million dollars in fuel.

A total of 100 of these generators currently operate in the provinces of Pinar del Rio, Las Tunas, Camagüey and Holguín, including the special municipality of the Isle of Youth.

Despite the non-stop work of repairing brigades, there are still 80,000 homes and institutions without electricity due to the hurricanes. (RHC)
