Havana Times, Cuba’s New Online Publication
HAVANA,
Oct 15.— Cuba has a new online English language
publication as of Wednesday accessible at
www.havanatimes.org
.
Under the
motto “open-minded writing from Cuba”, Havana Times will
seek to avoid the black and white stereotyped reporting
from and about the island.
Several
Cubans will be giving you their thoughts and personal
accounts of life on the island in the section titled
“Diaries from Havana.” This is not the typical writing
you see coming out of the island in English. The initial
contributors to this section are Maite Vera, Leonid
Lopez, Mavis Alvarez, Veronica Fernandez and Rainer
Rubira.
Photos will
bring you the creative photography of Caridad, a young
Havana photographer, as well as the work of other
professional and amateur photographers.
The Features
section will include reports from the Havana office of
Inter Press Service (IPS) who do a balanced job at
presenting current issues. Updates will be short news
briefs that keep you informed on current events.
Opinion will
start out with commentaries by HT editor Circles
Robinson,
www.circlesonline.blogspot.com and expand to other
writers as well as time goes on.
By the time
it gets in full swing the What’s On section will present
a comprehensive section on cultural activity in the
Cuban capital with an accent on those things that might
be of interest to non-Spanish speaking visitors.
Havana Times
is holding an initial photo contest
http://www.havanatimes.org/?page_id=752 that is open
to anyone who has traveled to Cuba and would like to
share some of their work. Prizes will be awarded to
first and second place.
