Urban Agriculture in Search of Success in Las Tunas
By Wálner Ortega Batista
Las
Tunas, Cuba, Jan 19, (P26).- Las Tunas
obtained the highest rating in the four tours of the
National Program of Suburban Agriculture, thanks to
the production of 68,637 tons of fresh vegetables
and herbs.
The production of vegetables, in the territory, is
focused on 25 crops emi-housed (a mode in which Las
Tunas took first place nationally) 130 gardens and
198 intensive organic farms.
Added to these structures, more than seven thousand
home gardens and more than 18,000 patios with
rabbits, ornamental plants, fruit trees etc.
Managers of this program in the municipalities warn
of the possibility of converting hundreds of plots
into intensive orchards, and even in home
micro-gardens. So that, in this way the volume of
vegetables can be much greater to benefit the
consumers.
For the systematic work the municipalities of Las
Tunas, Colombia and Majibacoa were highlighted;
while the municipalities of Amancio, Jobabo and
Puerto Padre must work much harder.
Colombia is preparing to receive a visit this month
to assess whether It is declared the national
reference municipality or not, the highest category
awarded by the national group.
The primordial task today is to continue the work to
permit the organizational insertion of the
municipalities into Suburban Agriculture. In order
to bring food to urban areas and to encourage a mass
movement to declare the province a candidate for the
national reference, are two pillars on which this
year the collective work of the ambitious
program is based.
