Brazil, Mexico Want Democracy Back in Honduras

Brasilia, Aug 17, (PL).- Presidents of Brazil Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Mexico, Felipe Calderón, demanded today the immediate return of their counterpart Manuel Zelaya to power in Honduras, for the reestablishment of democracy in that nation.

In a press conference at the Palace of Itamaraty, home to the Brazilian Foreign Ministry, after holding official talks, Lula said that Latin America has today the challenge of contributing to the reestablishment of democracy in Honduras.

"With that purpose, Mexico and Brazil took a firm stand in favor of Zelaya"s immediate return to Tegucigalpa," said and added that it is indispensable to react according to what was agreed on in the Organization of American States (OAS).

The Brazilian president stressed that "we cannot tolérate or allow an attempt against constitutional order. That was the lesson we learned through severe decades of struggle to return the liberty and peace to our region."

Calderón expressed that he talked a lot with Lula on Onduras and "we reiterated our demand for the reestablishment of constitutional order in that country, through the return of Manuel Zelaya to the presidency, elected by Hondurans."

He also highlighted the support of Mexico and Brazil to the diplomatic actions being made in the international level.

Last June 28 a military coup ousted Zelaya not only from power but also from the country.
