Department of Justice Absolves Authors of Torture Memorandums

The magazine Newsweek revealed that shortly the Department of Justice will submit a report which absolves the lawyers John Yoo and Jay Bybee, officials of George W. Bush's previous government, of the accusation of lack of professional ethics by editing memorandums which justified the technique of waterboarding and other forms of torture.

The Office of Professional Responsibility determined that Yoo and Bybee showed "little judgement" when they wrote a memorandum in 2002 in which they approved the increase of those interrogation techniques, but the report doesn't recommend disciplinary measures against the former officials.

A previous version of the report, prepared by the Bush government, had recommended that Yoo and Bybee be sent to the state disciplinary authorities, and be subjected to sanctions that could have included the repeal of their professional licenses.
