Mexico and
Cuba: Working towards Strengthening Relations
Mexican and Cuban politicians met again in
Havana for another round of official talks with the aim of
strengthening bilateral relations.
The leader of the Democratic Revolutionary
Party in the Mexican Parliament told
the news agency, Prensa Latina
that not only is his party interested in tightening current
relations but so are the rest of the political Mexican
alliances included in the delegation.
Both nations have maintained historical
relations of friendship that have been improved by the
current Mexican government after a cooling of diplomatic
ties during Vicente Fox’s term due to his submissive
attitude towards the US.
However, political ties are full of mutual
confidence once again and especially during the last four
years. Patricia Espinosa, Mexican Foreign Minister between
2008 and 2009, for instance, traveled to Havana as a gesture
of good will to consolidate bilateral friendship and
collaboration.
The mutual understanding memorandum on
migration signed by both countries in October 2008, viewed
as an efficient instrument for fighting against the illegal
and unscrupulous traffic of human beings, also confirms the
wishes on both sides to build on existing good relations.
In the same tone, both states are mutually
involved having the common objective of continuing and
deepening the process of regional integration. During Mrs.
Espinosa visit to Havana last December, it was affirmed that
Mexico is convinced of the importance of this international
process between Latin America and the Caribbean countries as
the fundamental step to be taken for benefiting all our
societies, she quoted.
There is also a current multilateral agenda
in which many positions and common interests are shared to
deal with the effects of climatic changes, the global
economic crisis, and other outstanding issues.
Rodríguez Parrilla, Cuban Minister of Foreign
Affairs, has also pointed out the importance of following a
positive and promising bilateral path that Cuba really
appreciates and continues to develop.
Because of all that has gone before and is
going on now, this encounter in Havana is very important for
evaluating bilateral relations with a view to working
together towards growth and diversification, something both
countries that share a history and location, desire.
