Ethiopia's Sugar Industry Group (ESIG) and Cuba's AZCUBA sugar group reportedly signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to cooperate in research, development, production, technical assistance, and other areas.

Addis Ababa.- Wayo Roba, general director of ESIG, and his Cuban counterpart, Francisco René Martín, signed the agreement at a ceremony held at the headquarters of the local company on Friday, Fana Broadcasting Corporate informed. The state-run company reported that the agreement will facilitate a joint commitment between the two parties in capacity building, sugarcane variety development, biotechnology, technology transfer, and trade within the sector.

In his speech, Roba expressed his appreciation to Cuba for its willingness to share its expertise in the sugar sector and work with his delegation.

The talks and the signing of the MoU follow a meeting between Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Cuban Vice President Salvador Valdés Mesa in November 2023, in which they explored increased cooperation in the health sector, tourism services, education, and the sugar industry. (PL)
