Internationalist from Las Tunas were recognized in the 60th anniversary of the Cuban Medical Cooperation

Heartfelt tribute, admiration, and the Manuel Pity Fajardo Medal were received by a dozen internationalists on the 60th anniversary of the Cuban Medical Cooperation. Among those honored, Dr. Assel Herrera Correa, kidnapped in Kenya, a regret that is shared by all the Cuban people, exceptionally stood out.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- In the celebrations, at the heat of the Major General Vicente García González Revolution Plaza, in this city, Manuel Sosa Lozada, head of the Department of Medical Collaboration in the territory, revered the contribution of 1,589 doctors, who provide services in 44 nations.

Sosa Lozada praised the value of the internationalists, who have reached the most distant confines of the five continents with altruism and solidarity, with the sole premise of safeguarding life. He highlighted the tasks carried out in the last ten years by the brigades of the Henry Reeve International Contingent of Doctors Specialized in Disaster Situations and Serious Epidemics, in the fight against Ebola, COVID-19, and natural disasters.

The performance of the municipalities of Manatí, Las Tunas, Puerto Padre, and Majibacoa was recognized; as well as the impact of the personnel scattered around the world in support of Primary Health Care and hospital institutions services.

The voice of doctor Pedro David Alarcón González mingled with the spirit of the new generations to ratify the commitment of the people of Las Tunas to continue bringing health and hope to the nooks and crannies where humanism does not accompany man. At the meeting, they talked about sensitivity, values, and altruism.

The Cuban medical collaboration began on May 23, 1963, in Algeria, and as of today, more than 605,698 collaborators have provided service in 165 countries.

Currently, 25,688 cooperators work in 59 nations, according to statistics from Cuba's Ministry of Public Health.

The Henry Reeve contingent was founded by the leader of the Revolution, Fidel Castro, in 2005; since then, 88 brigades -composed of 13,467 collaborators- have been sent to 56 countries.
