Cuba's President Miguel Díaz-Canel has extolled as exemplary the work of 40 Cuban doctors from the Henry Reeve medical contingent in Mozambique where they went on an emergency mission to assist people following lethal hurricane Idai.

Havana, Cuba.- "'Welcome back to the Homeland," the President wrote in Twitter using labels #SomosCuba and #SomosContinuidad.

The physicians arrived in Havana in the early hours of Sunday from Beira, Mozambique, where they assisted victims of the fierce hurricane that hit that African country last March.

After welcoming them at Havana international airport, Cuba's Minister of Public Health José Ángel Portal stressed the doctors left the indelible mark of the Revolution in Mozambique.

The medical team's chief doctor, Rolando Piloto, said they put up a field hospital for clinical, surgical and epidemiological assistance. In Beira, the Cuban doctors provided pediatric, internal medicine, surgery, gynecological and orthopedic services, besides clinical lab exams, he added.

The team attended to 22,259 patients and did 331 surgeries, 128 on elderly and 203 on minors, during the 63 days they were posted there, Dr. Piloto explained. (PL)
