May Day Parade, Las Tunas, 2022.

It's 6:30 in the morning and you can already see movement in the streets; families in a hurried approach what should be a meeting point. It might seem casual that some wear blue, red, and white; but it's all about symbolism. Those are the colors of our national flag. It is like something that we have engraved inside, it is May Day and those are the representative colors of this Island.

It is almost impossible to identify faces due to the inevitable use of the mask, some people even with two. Many thought that this parade would be the reason for another wave of infections. Surely, they did not foresee that our people are trained in matters of saving and being saved.

It is the hour of the longed-for encounter, in which the first laughter and longing are felt; the memories of those years in which May Day was a day to go out to ratify the commitment to the Revolution. This year, it also became an ovation to life.

An army of white coats breaks the streets with slogans that make you feel proud of them, of living in this land that cares for and saves,  sovereign and mambisa island.

Looking at "the angels in white coats" makes us remember the applause, at nine o'clock at night, that well-deserved breath of life that we transmitted to them from our homes because it was the only thing we could do in such difficult times, wait and be thankful.

This day is a party, the farmers pass by, those of culture, of energy..., they all pass by. The order is maintained, always distributed by blocks; we are countless Cubans in solemn praise, in a struggle to remain free. And this is demonstrated by the "Homeland or death!" that someone threw, to which everyone responded, "We will win!"

And we won that January 1st, 1959, we won in Playa Girón; we did it when the Pedro Kourí Institute of Tropical Medicine was created and when they brought back the boy Elián; also the day the Five Heroes were released, and when the first COVID-19 patient was discharged.

So, what is this May Day but a party for the people? And that is what this International Workers' Day became, the date perhaps most remembered by all after a long time, in which the colors of the flag are worn again because this imperishable garment is the best attribute to show that I am Cuban and I love this land.

This is how my workday ends, with immense joy, tears in my eyes, and mixed feelings. Who would say that after so much, at last, we would have May Day back in the squares!!!
