Las Tunas celebrates the International Nursing Day

With the certainty that Nursing is one of the noblest professions, 4, 258 workers of this branch carry out a day of celebration for their International Day, next May 12.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- Jhoannys Diéguez Peña, head of the Nursing section in the province, says that since last April they have started a program of activities to honor the staff. “The objective is to praise our guild that during more than two years of the pandemic has assumed a leading role.

“Let us remember that, in the beginning, when we barely knew about the disease, we had to prepare quickly to face this health situation. We reorganized hospitals and other Primary Health Care centers, we trained groups; and thanks to everyone's efforts both, inside and outside the red zone, the results were satisfactory and, today, the province maintains the epidemiological stability."

Peña commented that the most outstanding nurses were honored in the opening ceremony. During these weeks, meetings between retirees and the new generation were held. “To stimulate them, scientific and cultural activities were carried out. We even held recently a culinary art festival, with representation from healthcare facilities.”

All the municipalities, she pointed out, organized a program of actions to honor their workers. The celebration included a visit to the House for Children without Family Protection and health days, in which educational talks were offered to prevent sexually transmitted diseases, besides our participation in the May Day Parade.

"We have programmed meetings with the population from vulnerable neighborhoods and, soon, we will go to the Psycho-pedagogical Center to deliver a donation, which was possible thanks to the collaboration of different nursing staffs in the province."

A group of nurses arrived at the Mártires de Las Tunas Pediatric Hospital to visit patients admitted to the oncohematology ward. It was very emotional, Peña says, because “with our modest efforts we managed to give them some toys, pencils, and coloring books; an opportunity to share with them and make them smile amid their difficult situation.”

On May 12, a gala will take place, during which the work of those who stood out in the confrontation with the pandemic will be recognized. That day, the Piti Fajardo Medal will be delivered to workers with more than 25 years linked to the sector, and people who take retirement will be honored.

“We have great confidence in our Nursing staff, which is on the path to excellence every day, and is projected to raise the quality of care; for thus to extol a profession that is always on the front line,” she concluded.
