May 8, Cuba's Son Day

An event has been held from May 5 to 8 to celebrate Son Cubano Day, instituted in 2020. On this occasion, it pays tribute to the renowned late musician Adalberto Álvarez, National Music Award 2008, who dreamed of and defended the existence of a date dedicated to the genre, which is celebrated today throughout Cuba.

Performers and groups that defend that sonority here carry out initiatives, which at the territorial level also honor the outstanding groups Barricada and Son del Barrio, which are exponents of this genre.

Luis Ernesto Núñez GarcíaAccording to Luis Ernesto Núñez García, the coordinator of Heritage in the provincial capital, the Emiliano Salvador Music House has hosted activities such as meetings with cultists from Las Tunas, including José Fidel Sánchez and Divania González.

"Other spaces have also echoed allegorical presentations, for example, “I Sing to the Son,” which took place on Saturday night in the Plaza de los Recuerdos, with the leading roles of the soloists Berlis Fernández and Lays Rodríguez.

"That date, the program was also dedicated to the concert bands. The Las Tunas Concert Band performed In front of the Mayor General Vicente García provincial museum and, later, at the Emiliano Salvador Music House together with the Conjunto Original Cucalambé, and the group Son del Barrio,” Núñez García said.

He reported that, today, the agenda is tied, with "conferences in which the Heritage Chair of the University of Las Tunas and professors from the El Cucalambé Professional Art School are participating. Also, at the Tomasa Varona Culture House, a dance workshop will be held.

"And in the Cultural Plaza, at 7:00 pm, the meeting Dancing to the Longest Son in Cuba will take place, with the accompaniment of “Barricada;” the population can join, without a competitive nature. Later, the closing gala “I Love my Son” will take place, under my direction, which will also include Barricada, as well as Cueybá and guest soloists.”

Celebrating the Son Cubano Day

When asked about the importance of celebrating the Son Cubano Day, who has been immersed in the cultural universe for more than two decades said: "That this ephemerid exists is fundamental because we still confuse the son with the casino and thus, at the country level, we give it more value. From the Balcón de Oriente (Eastern Cuban Balcony), we dream of a future that has more provincial scope and expands the exchange of knowledge between our representatives. This would also contribute to a higher quality of the presentations during the Cucalambeana Fiesta, in which we see a great presence in the genre. I think we have to project ourselves better in that sense because sometimes we teach it badly.”

The Son Cubano Day was chosen to coincide with the births of Miguel Matamoros and Miguelito Cuní, and it intends to be the spearhead for the materialization of the declaration of this genre as the Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
