Peruvian Interior Minister Willy HuertaA second attempt to censure Peruvian Interior Minister Willy Huerta failed on Wednesday in parliament for lack of support, forcing its promoters to back down.

Lima.- The motion of censure, which if approved will force Huerta to resign, failed last week for not reaching the votes of half plus one of the total numbers of congressmen before which the extreme right-wing party that proposed it, Avanza País, asked to reconsider the vote, and today's plenary session was to decide on the matter.

However, five progressive lawmakers asked to postpone the session because this week Congress had reserved it for visits of legislators to their jurisdictions of origin.

Given the possibility that, due to this and other factors, today's plenary session would not have a quorum, the Avanza País group withdrew its request for reconsideration but announced that it will present another motion of censure against the Minister of the Interior.

This group and two others form a block of the extreme right-wing and center allies that seek the censure of Huerta for the decision of President Pedro Castillo to change the three members of the high command of the Police, supposedly to hinder the investigations of the president for alleged corruption.

After the announcement of the cancellation of the plenary session and a new motion of censure, Huerta only commented that he respects the decisions made by Congress and that he will continue in the position entrusted to him by the president until the president or Congress decides otherwise.

Asked about the accusation of hindering the investigations of the president, the minister said that the facts disprove it since his ministry and the Police are collaborating with the investigations. (PL)
