Although a large part of all 13 active zones of the Cuban National Seismological Service (SSNC) registered a high occurrence of tremors during the first semester of this year, the summary of that trend points to moderation.

Santiago de Cuba.- These first six months are left with only seven perceptible tremors, with magnitudes lower than 6.0 on the Richter scale, and located south of Cuba’s eastern region and one north of Honduras that was perceptible in the central-western region of the country.

The other tremors were located in the vicinity of Haiti and were felt on the south coast of Cuba’s eastern region, according to data provided by the SSNC, which is attached to the National Center for Seismological Research (Cenais), based in Santiago de Cuba.

In ten of these areas delimited by these scientific institutions, seismicity was considered high, with a total of 3,516 earthquakes, and in correspondence with the energy released, those reported in Pinar and South and North Bahamas were valued as normal.

A very interesting thing is that the most significant telluric movement occurred north of the eastern provinces of Las Tunas, Holguín, and Camagüey, with a total of 884 movements in a range of 1.34 to 4.3 degrees of magnitude.

In line with this situation, a temporary monitoring station was recently installed in the town of Puerto Padre, in Holguín province. (PL)
