Pregnan women are protected as Hurricane Melissa approaches.

At the Herminia Betancourt Maternity Home, located in the Gustavo Aldereguía Polyclinic health area, the approaching hurricane has been rigorously handled by the medical staff, who are ensuring not only the preservation of the institution but also that each pregnant woman receives quality and uninterrupted medical care, tailored to her specific needs.

María Eugenia Ávila Hernández, supervisor at the Herminia Betancourt Maternity Home.María Eugenia Ávila Hernández, the supervisor, told 26 that all 19 beds at the center are currently occupied because full-term patients whose residence areas are at risk of flooding have been transferred there.

"High-risk pregnant women were sent to the Dr. Ernesto Guevara Provincial General Hospital so they can receive specialized care, if necessary," Ávila Hernández commented.

"We have all the necessary precautions to cope with the weather phenomenon: medications, liquefied gas, and water. We've also activated the emergency numbers to contact the ambulance service."

The nurse explained that the institution is currently housing four pregnant teenagers at high risk of prematurity due to their age, along with other associated health conditions. They also admitted several women with high blood pressure and others with insufficient weight gain.

On Tuesday, all arrangements are finalized to ensure the tranquility that characterizes the “Herminia Betancourt” and the other 11 maternity homes in the province are maintained in the coming days, regardless of Melissa's passage through the country.
