In 2023, ETECSA marketed around 400 QR codes.

The commercialization of more than 1,600 QR codes by Empresa de Telecomunicaciones de Cuba S.A. (Etecsa in Spanish) in Las Tunas shows the progress made by this territory in the bancarisation of operations, a task that began even before implementing the process throughout the country.

Las Tunas, Cuba: Nelson Reyes González, director of the ETECSA Territorial Division in Las Tunas, told the Cuban News Agency in an exclusive interview that although the experience has not yet been generalized to all economic and social actors, the increase in service and above all, what this represents in financial terms is recognized.

In 2023, the company had around 400 QR codes marketed, and during the calendar year, this figure grew to more than 1,600; a result that still keeps the entity dissatisfied because only approximately 300 are in operation, the director pointed out.

However, when an analysis is made of the income received for this concept, in January, one million pesos were reported and at the end of 2023, the figure exceeded 30 million pesos collected through this form of payment.

Reyes González said that it is necessary to continue to intensify training on these issues for state companies and new economic actors, to achieve a total impact on the bank restructuring process, a faster and safer way to make financial transactions viable with technology.

ETECSA in Las Tunas, although it began to implement this service before generalizing the experience five months ago, plans to surpass these numbers and place banking penetration among its efficiency indicators.

Focused on the creation of civil infrastructure as long as the country's economic situation allows for new technological investments, ETECSA also plans to carry out an environmental study in alliance with the Provincial Delegation of the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Environment, added Reyes González.
