Opening of Ward A at the Mártires de Las Tunas Pediatrics Hospital, July 26, 2025.

In the capital of Las Tunas province, two new and some renovated projects opened their doors on July 26th, as a tribute to the 72nd anniversary of the assaults on the Moncada and Carlos Manuel de Céspedes barracks, which took place on that date in 1953.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- The inauguration of Ward A at the Mártires de Las Tunas Pediatric Hospital marked the beginning of a tour led by Osbel Lorenzo Rodríguez, First Secretary of the Cuban Communist Party (PCC), and Yelenis Tornet Menéndez, Governor. Dr. María Cristina Vázquez, director of the health institution, described the new facility and the rehabilitation efforts of the Breast Milk Bank as a clear demonstration of the institution's interest in improving conditions for the care and protection of infants, as well as the possibility of doing more for the well-being of the people.

She said the cost of the project so far is 42,395,083 pesos. The facility offers miscellaneous services in Pediatrics, Dermatology, Endocrinology, Rheumatology, Nutrition, Immunology, and Oncology, among other specialties.

"This facility greatly improves the service, as well as the well-being of the children, healthcare professionals, and those accompanying them," affirmed Dr. Guillermo Acosta, a first-degree specialist in General Medicine and Pediatrics, with a master's degree in Comprehensive Child Care.

He recalled that “we had a very small ward, with few beds, and the patients were scattered. Now we have 24 beds, and the patients are concentrated in one area, allowing for better care and monitoring of their progress.”

Midelsis Peña Mayo, assistant at the Breast Milk Bank, and Eudelia Palomares Sánchez, a processor in that area, praise the improvement work carried out and agree that “everything turned out very well, and working conditions are now better.”

Everyone is grateful for the quality of the construction work undertaken by the Milenius SME, whose members were honored at the emotional meeting alongside healthcare workers who contributed to the realization of this collective dream.

Another important moment this day was the opening of the control room for the electric valves for the automatic operation and monitoring of the inflow and distribution of water from the La Cana basin, in Piedra Hueca.

Mirtha García Rojas, delegate of the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources (INRH) in Las Tunas, explained the details of the project aimed at fully automate the hydraulic system, as part of a strategy to operate the city's water supply from the Aqueduct base business unit (UEB), which is being implemented by the MSME Control Xi.

Equally significant was the reopening, after just over a year of inactivity, of the Herminia Betancourt Maternity Home in Popular Council 18 of the Santos neighborhood, belonging to the Gustavo Aldereguía polyclinic's health area.

Dr. Yulieth Pérez Almaguer, director of the institution, emphasized that the remodeling efforts were motivated by the goal of improving the health of pregnant women and minimizing potential risks during pregnancy.

“The repairs cost 9.5 million pesos and added space for two more beds. Thus, have 22.” She explained that work is being done to modify the risks for pregnant women, an effort that involves doctors, nurses, and service personnel. “We made a dream come true, and we are going to work to be worthy of this project,” she emphasized.

The work group is grateful for the major repairs to the building that houses the National Office of Statistics and Information (ONEI) in the main municipality, “because the change is significant. Now, we feel more comfortable and motivated,” said Geisel Martínez Téllez, a territorial statistician, on behalf of her 12 colleagues.
