The Stainless-Steel Company (ACINOX Las Tunas) recently held the first scientific workshop of the PAPT Escorias project, which focuses on production wastes and their use as raw material in construction elements to reduce their environmental impact. One of the event's objectives was to highlight the results achieved by the institution in reducing the damage caused by metallurgical processes.
Las Tunas, Cuba.- Yunior Santiesteban Rodríguez, director of Science, Quality, Technology, and Development, emphasized the presentation of the entity's science system and highlighted concrete steps taken in the last five years to mitigate the harmful impact on the environment, which were endorsed by the recently obtained award at the 5th International Scientific Convention of the University of Las Tunas.
Likewise, the president of the Territorial Program for Environmental, Natural Resources, and Climate Change Projects of Citma in Las Tunas, Alexey Moreno Borges, Master of Science, expressed the need to disseminate what has been done in other companies and institutions and to diversify the project's actions to achieve greater achievements at the local and territorial levels.
During the exchange, researcher Liodilio Alarcón Pérez, the main promoter of studies in this field, was recognized. Among other achievements, he is credited with the creation of the product MorteroL, a building material that has enabled applications such as the sealing of funeral vaults. This sensitive use has contributed more than 12 million pesos annually in sales to the center.
Each year, 5,760 units of 77.5 kilograms of this material are produced as a substitute for cement in housing construction. In this regard, the contribution of the master's thesis focused on the formulation of mortars with white slag, promoted by Yudania Luna Riso, Master of Science, stands out.
The exchange provided insight into other achievements within the organization that represent significant savings for the country's budget in terms of raw materials for steel production. The head of CITMA's Program and Project System Department, Luis Cordoví Hechavarría, who holds a master's degree in science, and Arays Isabel Pompa González, who also holds a master's degree and is the program's secretary, urged the continuation of these initiatives and the implementation of others.
Acinox Las Tunas seeks to diversify its production from an innovative approach, based on the circular economy, to become a high-tech company.
