School notebooks manufacture at Las Tunas Graphic Productions workshop.

Amid a context marked by scarcity of resources and raw materials, the Gráfica Las Tunas base business unit is redoubling its efforts to shorten delivery schedules for the school year's notebooks. The constant sound of the machines indicates that the group is working with the urgency and quality that characterizes them.

Marisol torres VázquezLas Tunas, Cuba.- Marisol Torres Vázquez, the director, told 26 that the workshop currently produces more than 16,000 notebooks daily and ensures that the process continues, whose results end up in the classrooms of Cuban students.

"We have a plan of four million notebooks each year; this time, we are experiencing a delay of around 260,000 as a result of the country's late procurement of cardboard and paper. The economic blockade is punishing Cuba and forcing us to operate in different ways to obtain resources at better prices," Torres Vázquez stated.

"We began working with two shifts on September 3 and are ensuring the quality of the school supplies that will be sent to the provinces of Matanzas, Cienfuegos, and Villa Clara. This month, we must meet the debts on our state order."

They also sell book covers, geometric figures, and educational materials for students up to sixth grade.

More than 600,000 pesos in sales during the summer support the widespread acceptance of this type of business. They have also recently taken on the challenge of improvising sales points in high-traffic areas in the downtown and are even seeking to have a presence at the agricultural trade fairs planned in the city.

"We have a strong production plan, but we are looking for alternatives to meet it," the executive says. "We have begun making various cards, and we are looking for potential clients with products that don't rely solely on cardboard. We have strengthened our handicrafts and have already started making beaded beads for pads."
