Cleaning of canals, ditches and culverts is essential.

Due to its location in the Caribbean Sea, Cuba rigorously prepares for weather events. The approach of Hurricane Melissa forces eastern provinces to safeguard human lives, first and foremost, and protect crops, animals, and property at risk of damage.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- The president of the Provincial Defense Council, Osbel Lorenzo Rodríguez, informed the expanded National Defense Council that a total of 72,000 residents of Las Tunas must seek protection in 133 evacuation centers and in the homes of family and friends.

Cleaning of canals, ditches and culverts is essentialIn the case of our territory, Lorenzo Rodríguez explained to 26, "a group of measures related to sanitation and unblocking drains and sewers are being implemented."

"We must take advantage of every minute and continue the collection of solid waste, which we consider essential. Farmers and agricultural workers are harvesting some crops, primarily cassava, which is at its peak, as well as plantains and sweet potatoes.

"Livestock is being transferred to higher places, especially small animals, where there are calves, small livestock, and poultry."

One of the greatest concerns expressed by the CDP president is the population's awareness of the approaching meteorological event, its magnitude, and the importance of discipline at this stage.

"We have increased our work in the neighborhoods. We have distributed all entities in the territory, all the companies, district by district. We are conducting visits to each of the neighborhoods. We have emphasized the importance of being prepared for the worst-case scenario."

"We must be aware that the hurricane could pass through the territory; this is one of the possibilities that specialists have addressed. That is why we emphasize the need to preserve human lives."

"People should be aware that they should not bathe in rivers or streams, touch downed power lines, or go fishing. Drinking alcoholic beverages is not recommended."

Among the Defense Council's priorities is the transfer of patients with chronic conditions; this matter has been discussed with health authorities to transport bedridden patients, pregnant women at term, and children with complex illnesses to hospital services.

The work does not stop; as long as weather conditions permit, preventive actions will continue to safeguard human lives; that is the main objective.
