Cuban Transport Minister Eduardo Rodríguez Dávila personally toured the railroad from Jobabo to the community of Guamo to assess the damage caused by Hurricane Melissa. The inspection, carried out on Thursday, is part of the effort to restore railway service between Las Tunas and Granma provinces.
Las Tunas, Cuba.– The delegation departed early from Jobabo aboard railbus 122 of the Eastern Railway Company. During the journey, the minister spoke with passengers to learn about their concerns and suggestions regarding the transportation service.
One of the most critical sections is located between kilometer 83, in the town of Las Torres, and the crossing of the Bayamo-Combinado line. Rodríguez Dávila specified that in this eleven-kilometer stretch, the track and bridges suffered deep erosion. The bridge at kilometer 94, in the town of Río Cauto, is the most damaged.
“The work on the bridges is the most complex and dangerous for the workers due to the height,” the minister explained on his Facebook profile.
Of the eleven affected kilometers, six have already been repaired, with specific speed limits for trains established. Work on the remaining five kilometers will begin once all the necessary equipment and resources are secured.
Approximately 1,500 cubic meters of stone are needed for the repairs, a material that is already being transported from the Jiguaní quarry. It is estimated that the work will conclude within ten to fifteen days, allowing trains to pass.
The minister acknowledged the work of the track maintenance workers, “those men who are on the ground restoring the track's geometry under harsh conditions.”
Regarding their personal income and employment needs, he assured that efforts will be made to ensure they receive the deserved attention.
Rodríguez Dávila stated that future publications will provide updates on these efforts and the restoration of rail service in the province.
