Voluntary work day in Las Tunas to homage Che.

From rural areas and cities, more than five thousand residents of Las Tunas paid tribute to Ernesto "Che" Guevara on the 66th anniversary of the first voluntary work carried out by the legendary guerrilla fighter.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- Daniuris Ortiz Velázquez, a member of the Provincial Secretariat of the CTC (Central Union of Cuban Workers), reported that the participants, mobilized by the workers' organization and its unions, primarily supported activities related to food production and environmental sanitation in all municipalities.

She emphasized that the participants marched with enthusiasm and were motivated by the legacy of the Heroic Guerrilla, a promoter of voluntary work in Cuba, whose example inspires these efforts, which contribute to strategic tasks for the country, such as achieving food sovereignty.

From early morning, the productive centers, the self-sufficiency programs of various entities, and the urban gardens in the municipal capitals fertilized their lands with the sweat of workers, helping to bring dreams to fruition and underscoring the will to join forces and create together for Cuba, said Ortiz Velázquez.

The labor leader detailed that during these days, more than 20 hectares of cassava were planted and weeded, plantain crops were tended in local productive poles, and weeding and other actions were carried out in 17 urban gardens to facilitate the healthy growth of the crops.

Another urgent need addressed was the cleaning and beautification of workplaces, as well as solid waste collection and sanitation in communities, to mitigate vulnerabilities and strengthen barriers against the Aedes aegypti mosquito and other vectors that contribute to the current difficult epidemiological situation.

The main activity took place on Sunday, but the tribute began on Saturday with mobilizations that promoted planting and cleaning in 12 companies’ self-consumption areas, and the sanitization and embellishment of centers from different sectors.
