Las Tunas, Cuba.- Almost 18,000 children of this eastern province will be immunized in vaccination centres during the first stage of the campaign.
Managers of the Provincial Center of Hygiene, Epidemiology and Microbiology in Las Tunas announced that there will be a second stage, between April 22 and 27, to complete the entire anti-polio cycle.
"In this second stage we will add to those already immunized at first, another 6, 389 children from nine years to 11 months and 29 days, which are reactivated in the vaccination, so that we will be completing a total of 24,292 immunized children against polio in Las Tunas, at the specified ages, during both stages ", points out Dr. Aldo Cortés González, deputy director of Epidemiology.
The polio vaccine is administered orally in doses of two drops. Health authorities warn not to apply it if there are febrile symptoms; children should not drink water half an hour before and after the oral vaccine.
From 1962 to last year (2018) around 85 million 200,000 doses of the immunogenic have been applied in Cuba, according to official reports from the Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP). Thus the population under 70 years of age in the Caribbean nation is protected.
