Forty-three percent of the polluting load generated in the province of Las Tunas, annually, is thrown into the environment, without having received prior treatment by the corresponding entities.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- Information released at a working session of the Board of Directors in the territory means that the progressive existence of waste is remarkable; in 2017, the figure rose to 8,380 tons, higher than the same stage before.
Some 87 polluting sources are located in the province, most of them in Las Tunas and Puerto Padre, the most populous cities, with 163,000 and 34,000 inhabitants, respectively, while the list includes the Public Health ministry's entities and the Sugar, Meat, Swine and Dairy Companies.
As a result of insufficient infrastructure for treatment works and irresponsible behavior, it is estimated that 80 percent of the pollution that goes to the environment comes from population settlements.
The Sugar Company has the worst scenario to address this problem, due to large investments it needs for this purpose, since the Antonio Guiteras sugar mill alone requires some 10 million pesos to meet environmental needs.
According to the source, the biggest actions to be undertaken in Las Tunas in 2018 are carried out at the Guillermo Domínguez hospital in Puerto Padre, where the waste treatment system must be completed, and in the sewerage network projects carried out by the provincial delegation of the National Institute of Water Resources in several villages.
The Agriculture system and the Swine Company, in particular, are working to have another 80 bio-digesters ready this year, which are also renewable energy sources.
Despite the fact that Puerto Padre is a municipality marked by the amount of polluting load, onSaturday was the venue of the provincial act for World Environment Day, in recognition of its initiatives to curb this evil and in the recovery of sandy beaches. (ACN)
