Coral Reef in Manatí: Open Door to Ecotourism

The conservation of corals is a priority issue for the specialists of the Bahía de Nuevas Grandes-La Isleta ecological reserve, in the northern municipality of Manatí.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- The systematization of these studies provides opportunities for the management of initiatives associated with ecotourism, combining hiking with the protection of the ecosystem.
Pedro Aguilera González, head of the project for the preservation of corals, assured that this project can be of vital importance in the constant mission of educating society in caring for the environment.
"The first thing we did in terms of joining ecotourism – Pedro pointed out- was to train the personnel of the area, especially the divers, to check the coral reef located in these areas of the municipality.
"We are in a privileged situation, there are around eight types of corals, these specimens are not affected by major diseases and none have signs of whitening to date."
The coral project is developed by specialists of the Flora and Fauna Company, with almost three years of implementation. The exploitation of an aquatic camera, a new acquired technology that allowed the observation of the area between the area of Mangalito Dos and La Barra was included in the latest researchs.
The company develops intentional assessments in Manatí to exploit opportunities such as ecotourism, taking advantage of natural values of the protected areas, such as the coral reef.
