Zero Forest Fires in Puerto Padre in the Most Critical Stage

The municipality of Puerto Padre continues without forest fires, after passing of January to May the most critical stage for the occurrence of such events in Cuba, confirmed Rafael Aguilera, head of the Rangers Corp.

Puerto Padre, Cuba.- Prevention and humidity favor the forest environment of the territory, with more than 30,000 hectares of trees in excellent vegetative conditions, from the coast to the municipalities of Jesús Menéndez, Majibacoa, Manatí and Las Tunas.
The human factor influence in 90 percent of the fires, due to the burns with different purposes, the sparks emitted by vehicles, and agricultural and forestry machinery, poaching, passers-by, irresponsible smokers and hives' castrators.
Aguilera pointed out that the most tending stage for the occurrence of fires ended in May, while during the hurricane season continues the danger as a result of electrical storms, causing of loss of human lives and wooded areas s, mostly between July and October.
The Covarrubias-La Jíbara protected area, with flora and fauna of high level of endemism, is served by 25 workers. After five years without wildfires from January to May, the lookouts adjust the scenario to assume the June-October stage, when the most probable causes are campers or thunderstorms, said the head of the Rangers Corp.
