Ramiro Valdés Assesses Mining, Industry and Energy Programs in Las Tunas

Commander of the Revolution Ramiro Valdés Menéndez evaluated the progress of programs of great significance for the national economy such as gold mining, investments in the iron and steel industry and renewable energy sources in this province of eastern Cuba. He also learned about the works carried out in the city to improve road infrastructure and services.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- Valdés Menéndez toured the chemical plant areas of the Golden Hill base business unit, in the municipality of Jobabo, from which 96.4 kilograms of gold dore were extracted last year. He was accompanied by Ariel Santana Santiesteban, first secretary of the Cuban Communist Party in the province, Lilian González Rodríguez, president of the Provincial Assembly of the People's Power, and the Deputy Minister of Energy and Mines, Yuri Viamontes.

The Vice President of the Councils of State and Ministers suggested analyzing the gradual renovation of the plant, and thus extend the period of extraction beyond 10 years allowed by the currently installed. Valdés Menéndez demonstrated special interest in the investments made since 2016 at the "Golden Hill" to make the mining activity friendlier with the environment.

Regarding this, Geomel Vila Placeres, its director, informed that in addition to ensuring the adequate technical condition of the waste treatment system, the water quality monitoring sites increased to 28. Likewise, more exhaustive studies of the hydrographic basin surrounding the mine are underway, and alternative sources of stable water supply for the city of Jobabo have been secured, as well as for agriculture and livestock in the region.

After hearing about the various options managed to definitively solve the situation created by the events of 2015, which compromised the water quality of the El Lavado dam, the Hero of the Republic of Cuba was categorical: "A water treatment plant, that is the solution," he said.

Later he visited the Comandante Paco Cabrera base business unit, known by its commercial name: Metunas; where he learned details of the program for the assembly, repair and integration of welding machines, which will allow reducing import costs and standardize brands and models .

The Commander of the Revolution evaluated the fundamental premises in the evaluation of the project to make a quality Cuban product, with a long service life, and urged the specialists to accelerate the technological studies tasks to start manufacturing the resource.

He also received information on the project of wind turbines for wind farms by sections, which will avoid the use of large cranes in the hoist process, will lower costs and will increase the final quality of the work.

Ramiro Valdés' tour of the territory also included the Acinox Las Tunas Stainless Steel Company, where he exchanged with workers and managers and evaluated the schedule of the new laminator that is being built in the province and which is expected to start production in 2020. The new factory will produce 150,000tons of corrugated bars and 20,000 of wire rod.

At the end of the afternoon, the Vice President of the Councils of State and Ministers verified the works of the South Ring Road and learned of the efforts of several brigades of the Ministry of Construction. He also enjoyed the Casa Insólita (Unusual House) and appreciated the construction of two swimming pools and other facilities at Las Palmeras theme park, a very attractive option for the residents of this city.
