Visitors of the Grand Hotel Manzana Kempinski, in Havana, will not be able to miss the contribution of Las Tunas to the splendor of that building, since its classic style furniture went out from the Ludema basic business unit ( UEB), which undertakes several investments that will make it more efficient and improve the working conditions of its staff.

INDOORS

Ludema Furniture EnterpriseMany projects are carried out inside this factory, belonging to the Business Group of the Furniture Industry (Dujo), and even a chair has a whole process. The smell of wood is embedded in the walls of the machining workshop, where the first forms are glimpsed. An unusual movement is glaringly obvious: Chinese technicians participate alongside their Cuban colleagues in the assembly of a centralized air extraction system, which will remove dust particles and chips from the environment.

Osmani Vigil, head of the workshop, praises the technological injection that will result in greater organization and cleanliness of the workplace and, of course, will reduce the effects of these harmful substances on the health of workers and the environment.
Vigil detailed that the previous system consumed a lot of electricity because it worked at maximum power. The new one will prevent sawdust spills and will be regulated according to the equipment into operations, so it will save 30 percent of electricity. The wood comes alive here, he explains.

"We use, above all, beech, cedar, mahogany, teak or import boards. We are 55 workers to cut, plane and sand the different elements of the furniture. There is a lot to do and we usually work in two shifts."

AMONG FORMS AND DETAILS

Ludema Furniture EnterpriseAround 50 workers, hidden behind masks to avoid dust and particles of paint, go coloring countless pieces in the assembly workshop, where the finishing process is brewed. A painting house of state of the art technology was recently put into operation here, which optimizes the work of its operators and assistants.

Miguel Núñez, head of the brigade, points out the benefits: "The final result of the product is much better. The system with water curtains allows the absorption and even the recycling of the paint residues. This makes the process cleaner for us and for the environment. "

In the area of upholstery, Erick Balmaseda is in charge of another 22 workers who are involved in highly complex routines, as quality standards are very high; and control and rigorousness accompany the entire process.

"About 80 percent of the furniture that the factory sells is made of upholstery and every day is a challenge. The pronounced curves in the non-traditional designs demand a lot of dedication. This is the first time that we work with the models we are working on. The staff is young, but with experience and committed to keep the reputation of Ludema,"Balmaseda pointed out.

WELL-EARNED PRESTIGE

This business unit has been a regular provider for several years of the facilities located in the main tourist destinations of the country such as Varadero, Jardines del Rey, Santa María Cay, Santiago de Cuba and the capital. After the compliance of its commitments with the Grand Hotel Manzana Kempinski, they assumed the task of furnishing the Packard Hotel, which should open next year. Likewise, Ludema fulfills other orders for Playa Pesquero resort, in the province of Holguín. Moreover, contract negotiations are underway with the Prado and Malecón Hotel, also in Havana.

Antonio Torres Infante, head of the Engineering and Development Group says that they take into account the requirements of other clients such as the Ministry of Domestic Trade, for which they manufacture cots. He notes that the technology already installed in the factory will also allow improving the precision of the cuts and moving the furniture without assembling them, which will have an impact on a more optimum use of transport.

Ludema has a production plan for the current year valued at more than 16 million pesos.
