Attempting to discredit Cuban health care professionals is part of President-elect Bolsonaro's campaign to destroy the More Doctors program

The men and women who study medicine in Cuba do not focus mainly on curing disease, as is customary around the world, but rather on preventing it, preserving the health of individuals, families, and communities, as well as the environment; and wherever they work, they win the respect of the population for their humanism.

This was emphasized by Dr. Jorge González Pérez, national director of teaching for the Ministry of Public Health (Minsap), during a special television program, broadcast yesterday.

Dr. Luis Alberto Pichs García, rector of the University of Havana's School of Medicine, explained that over the course of six years, medical students receive theoretical preparation closely linked with practical experience.

The practice of working in real situations from the beginning of their academic careers, Dr. Pichs said, is based on 290 years of tradition, "The entire National Health System is the scene of training. In the capital alone, involved in educational work are 54 hospitals, 82 polyclinics, 17 research centers, and all family doctors' offices; and there are more than 12,600 students."

This practice of combining research and assistance requires effort and sacrifice, especially given the cruel U.S. blockade, but this, he stated, is another pillar of Cuban medicine. (Granma)
