Las Tunas sugar workers celebrate their National Day

The sugar workers of Las Tunas celebrated their National Day this October 13th in the areas of the Antonio Guiteras Sugar Mill, in the municipality of Puerto Padre; an industry that is trying to climb to the stellar planes of other times, in which it was a compass and inspiration.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- They paused the challenging actions to prepare for the upcoming harvest and showed their decision and commitment to contribute greater efforts in the search for alternatives to the current shortages of resources, which are not few and test the human will.

Jaime Esquivel Diéguez, secretary-general of the Provincial Union of the sector, after recognizing the efforts of the groups, called on them to continue working to overcome the challenges and return to the victorious paths in the farming of sugarcane and the production of sugar and its derivatives.

Esquivel Diéguez urged to pay special attention to the repairs being carried out, in which innovators and rationalizers play an essential role, given the lack of spare parts essential for the efficient operation of the machinery.

In statements to the press, the union leader also highlighted the importance of complying with the sugarcane sowing plan as a guarantee for the upcoming harvests and its importance in saving the country's sugar sector.

Manuel Pérez Gallego, a member of the Central Committee and first secretary of the Cuban Communist Party (PCC) in the province, Jaime Chiang Vega, governor, and Odalis Batista Pérez, secretary-general of the Cuban Central Workers' Union (CTC), presided over the celebration and presented various awards to the most outstanding within the sugar agribusiness.

Eliecer Castro Sosa, from the "Antonio Guiteras" manufacturing area, an outstanding innovatorEliecer Castro Sosa, from the "Antonio Guiteras" manufacturing area, received the Prize for the Greatest Economic and Social Impact, awarded by the National Association of Innovators and Rationalizers (ANIR), for innovations that have a significant impact on production and services.

In addition, the Jesús Suárez Gayol Distinction, which recognizes 20 and 25 years of sustained and outstanding work in the sector, was awarded to several men and women; the basic cooperative production units (UBPCs) linked to the promotion of sugarcane were encouraged; and the derivatives plant of the Antonio Guiteras Sugar Company was praised for its union performance, another example of how the joint work of the administrative and union leaderships is a force for overcoming the challenges of these times.

Sugar workers are on a path full of challenges; the generalization of the best experiences can be a first step toward achieving the long-awaited salvation of a sector that is "part of the history, tradition, and cultural heritage of Cuba," as the PCC First Secretary and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, described it.

This can be a tool to stop the decline of sugarcane plantations and the industry production in this province, whose contribution to the national economy is crucial.
