In its development strategy until 2030, the Fishing Company of the province of Las Tunas, Pescatún, contemplates a sustained increase in oyster production, which will impact several coastal communities' economic and social development.
Las Tunas, Cuba - According to Adalberto Leyva Segura, director of Fishing Operations in the entity, currently three hectares are dedicated to the activity, and the projection is to reach 12, based on their efforts and the support of some collaborative projects that promote the sustainable development of this sector.
The director explained that there are three oyster farms in Manatí Bay, which have great potential for farming and harvesting this mollusk. These days, they have undertaken repair and foment actions to increase the number of collectors.
He mentioned that a project is under review in the Puerto Padre municipality to establish a new facility covering an area of three hectares. He also noted that this project will be financed by a Ministry of Science, Technology, and Environment (CITMA) program.
Leyva Segura said that a farm is being built in Guayabal, in the municipality of Amancio, with financing from the Conpescas Guacanayabo project; an alliance with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, financed by the Global Environment Facility.
These are important actions to allow sustainable development of mollusks and an increase in catches, which benefits the local and provincial economy, creates jobs, and provides nutrients to consumers.
The executive pointed out that the demand for oysters among the Las Tunas population is much greater than the supply, and the mass that is extracted is mainly destined for commercialization in the fishmongers and for electronic commerce.
Several sources agree that it is a food with high protein content, B vitamins, iron, calcium, zinc, Omega-3, and other valuable nutrients for the human organism. That is why it can be consumed in soups, sauces, creams, and its natural state.
In addition, its shells, by grinding, can be used in animal feed production, especially poultry. This is precisely one of Pescatún's innovations, which also responds to the protection of the environment.
