Panel discussion on the career of poet Antonio (Tony) Borrego.

These days, the Portus Patris Event has fostered literary creation among young people in the "Balcón de Oriente" (Balcony of Eastern Cuba), featuring book presentations, readings, recitals, informal gatherings, and academic sessions.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- A tribute to Antonio Borrego, in particular, brought together emerging and established writers to explore the life and work of the author of books such as Doy gracias a Dios de ser ateo (I Thank God for Being an Atheist), Juegos lunares (Lunar Games), and La eternidad no basta para todos (Eternity Is Not Enough for Everyone). An engaging panel discussion on the career of the man considered the most popular poet of his generation took place at the headquarters of the Nicolás Guillén Foundation (FNG).

Ana Margarita Arada Clavería —provincial president of the Hermanos Saíz Association (AHS), the institution driving Portus Patris— moderated the gathering. She was joined by Argel Fernández Granado, Marina Lourdes Jacobo, and Lucy Maestre, writers from Las Tunas with extensive work and close ties, both in time and spirit, to the unforgettable creator of Discurso de un hombre solo (Speech of a Solitary Man), who passed away in 2019.

The Portus Patris Literary Event features book presentations, readings, recitals, informal gatherings, and academic sessions"It was a special moment, a beautiful dialogue not only with the panelists but also with audience members such as doctors Mayra Acebo and Rafaela Macías," said the leader of the region's young artistic vanguard.

Meanwhile, other events have taken place at the Casa del Joven Creador (House of the Young Creator) and institutions like the República de Chile semi-boarding school, instilling in children love for literature.

“Despite the difficult circumstances the country is facing, we are committed to creation. During the panel on Tony, we shared a poem precisely about that: a commitment to life and creativity. We chose to dedicate this cultural event to Borrego and Lina de Feria —alongside the 40th anniversary of the AHS— because their work and artistic approaches resonate, in a way, with new generations,” added Ana Margarita.

At the event’s conclusion, the results of the Portus Patris literary contest —the longest-running competition of its kind organized by the AHS in the country— will be announced. Armando López Carralero, a jury member, noted that they received a total of nine poetry collections, selected three as finalists, and added that “any of those books could be the winner. We were particularly struck by the stylistic variety.”
