This Tuesday, at the Francisco (Paco) Cabrera Metal Structures Company (METUNAS), at the close of his visit, the Cuban president reviewed the progress of manufacturing the basic and secondary structures for the reconstruction of Unit 2 of the Lidio Ramón Pérez thermoelectric plant in Felton, Holguín province, which is undergoing complete reconstruction after suffering severe damage in a fire.

METUNAS has delivered 280 tons of the more than 600 planned, mainly the core columns, under a schedule that ensures continuity in the work being undertaken in Felton.

LEARNING ABOUT PESCATUN'S PRODUCTION

Díaz-Canel asked abour PESCATUN productions.

The Cuban president visited the Las Tunas Fishing Company (PESCATUN) to inquire about food production and the state's commitment to this industry, which has six basic business units (BBUs) and a subsidiary in the municipality of Puerto Padre.

Denia Castillo Maillo, the director general, explained that the company processes 90 percent of the province's aquaculture fish, with three fishing areas in Majibacoa, "Colombia," and Manatí, the latter with the most significant results.

The director explained that, based on the capture of cyprinids, tench, and labeo, a broad product portfolio with nearly 13 varieties has been created. Currently, they sell fish rounds, fillets, whole gutted fish, and other products for export.

The Las Tunas industry also stands out for its abundant production of fish patties, including hamburgers, pastries, and croquettes, which are well-received by the population.

Díaz-Canel asked abour PESCATUN productions.

Castillo Maillo emphasized that they produce around 70 tons per month, and so far this year, they have exceeded their plan by 42 tons.

During the summer, PESCATUN exceeded its state commitment and sold more than 80 tons of fish products. They are currently immersed in the blue runner fishery, which is also present in the fish market.

The Cuban president inquired about the production projections, the income, working conditions, and future goals to continue contributing to feeding the population.

Osbel Lorenzo Rodríguez, First Secretary of the PCC in Las Tunas, informed him that the Fishing Industry has a steady participation in the agricultural trade fairs held in the municipality.

AT THE PEDIATRIC HOSPITAL

The President toured refurbished wards in the Pediatric Hospital.

Accompanied by Osbel Lorenzo Rodríguez, First PCC Secretary in the province, and Juana Yamilka Viñals, Vice Governor, Díaz-Canel toured the Miscellaneous ward and the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Mártires de Las Tunas Pediatric Hospital, which reopened recently.

The work done in both spaces is an excellent example of the successful efforts of different economic actors and the local government, as the investment there, valued at more than 34 million pesos, was funded by the joint contributions of private companies and entrepreneurs, as well as government funds resulting from the contribution of state-owned businesses to territorial development, along with donations from Cuba-friendly associations in various countries.

Dr. María Cristina Cisneros Vázquez, director of the health institution, which will celebrate its 65th anniversary next August 28, highlighted that for 23 consecutive months, the ICU has not suffered a single death, and the survival rate of infants admitted there exceeds 97 percent.

Díaz-Canel confirmed the excellent comfort of the facility and inquired about the main health indicators of the institution and the province.

Although with different purposes, each visit by the Cuban president to our province has always included direct contact with representatives here from diverse sectors of the country's social, economic, political, and cultural life.

Early last year, the president began his series of visits to each municipality in Manatí to assess PCC compliance with the priorities outlined at that time by the organization. These visits concluded last April in “Colombia” and Jobabo.

Additionally, in October 2024, Díaz-Canel presided over an expanded Extraordinary Plenary Session of the PCC Provincial Committee. Before, in May 2023, he held contact with the main political and government authorities to review the implementation of the Balcón de Oriente economic and social strategy.

However, it was in February 2019, as part of his government visits, when he set foot on Las Tunas soil for the first time as head of state, within a work style that emphasizes collective leadership. These meetings were only interrupted after those held in early 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Díaz-Canel returned to this part of the archipelago in December 2021 to learn about the progress made in neighborhoods in transformation and then in April 2022, to preside over the Party’s Provincial Balance Assembly.
