No Más project in Las Tunas

Community meetings, supported by the Federation of Cuban Women (FMC), and led by many sensitive faces and voices inspired by the need to highlight the manifestations of gender-based violence and its multiple intersections, marked the second tour of the main national coordinators of the No Más project (No More) in Las Tunas.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- Marilys Zayas Shuman, director of Editorial de la Mujer, told 26 that the meeting left a positive outcome, especially in the development of the actions carried out in the province and those still pending.

“One of the aspects worth highlighting in Las Tunas’s performance is that they have worked together to achieve the agreed-upon commitments,” Zayas Shuman emphasized. The territory hosted the Gente con Swing workshops; this means a step forward in addressing gender-based violence among adolescents, an ideal prelude to upcoming initiatives to be carried out here, such as the launch of the Ahí Es Campaign (There it Is).

The co-leader of No Más, along with the FMC and the European NGO Cospe, pointed out that one of the main cycles consists of reaffirming the foundations for the work of the Cuban Press Observatory, aimed at identifying media coverage of gender-based violence in the six municipalities covered by the project. This professional group is based in the province and has a team of journalists specialized in the subject, who can guarantee a positive outcome for the effort, she affirmed.

“I would like to highlight the strength of the No Más coordinating team in the region, which, through valuable steps, has been paving the way for future, more significant undertakings, including the "The integration of institutions such as the Attorney General's Office, Public Health, the National Revolutionary Police (PNR), social workers, and others, who will be joining forces to support the work in the counseling offices," he stated.

Zayas Shuman stressed that Las Tunas has become the epicenter of these efforts in the eastern region and is setting a precedent for what can be achieved when convened with sensitivity and a commitment to social justice.

The work meetings also included insightful remarks from Yoanka Valdés, project coordinator from the Cospe office in Cuba; Lirians Gordillo, deputy director of Editorial de la Mujer; and Yoanna Lezcano, member of the collegiate coordination of the Martin Luther King Studies Center.
