After closing the month of August with the identification of ten cases of COVID-19, registered as the second most complex period in the confrontation with the disease in Las Tunas, it was possible to control the epidemiological situation that compromised one of the health areas of the provincial capital.
Las Tunas, Cuba.- The breakdown of health stability that kept the territory for more than 80 days without confirmed cases of SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus included the outcome of an infectious focus in the health area corresponding to the Gustavo Aldereguía Polyclinic, a situation that reactivated the alarms about the existence of the pathogen in Las Tunas.
Ismary Chantez Nieves, Gustavo Aldereguía's deputy director of medical assistance, explained that from the situation presented by the doctor’s office number 7, in the populous Buena Vista neighborhood, the direct and indirect contacts of those confirmed and the disinfection protocols for the streets and public spaces were activated.
In addition, a population study was carried out with PCR (polymerase chain reaction, to detect the presence of the virus) in 340 of the 692 people who appear in the registry of that primary health care institution, said Chantez Nieves exclusively to the Cuban News Agency (ACN).
She added that of the positive cases in this area, the vast majority are clinically discharged and remain under epidemiological surveillance after having favorably evolved in their treatments in the health institutions of the province; a pregnant woman and a 13-year-old adolescent remain hospitalized, but have no complications, she said.
Consequently, with the majority of those diagnosed with COVID-19 in Las Tunas being asymptomatic, the second-degree specialist in Pediatrics and Intensive Care Medicine Iliana Martín Llaudi told the ACN that regardless of the respiratory and psychological sequelae that the virus, the consequences in the medium and long term are unknown.
Very little is still known about the disease, but depending on the organism of each patient, it can trigger different immunological reactions, which is why it is important to take extreme measures and increase the perception of risk, even when Las Tunas is in phase three of the post-recovery stage, stressed Martín Llaudi.
In this eastern Cuban territory, there is an accentuation of hygienic and governmental measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19, in correspondence with the rebound registered in the last 15 days in the country, which accumulates 4,653 confirmed since March, when the first cases were reported.
The authorities call for citizen responsibility, to avoid the mobility and the celebration of parties and family gatherings, to correctly use the facemask, and to comply with the provisions established in institutions and public spaces.
