
The Cuban sports movement halted its events on Saturday and activated its protection protocols in response to the threat of Hurricane Melissa. In the province, the Carlos Leyva School for Sports Initiation (EIDE) was set up as an evacuation center to shelter approximately 300 people who live in at-risk areas.
Las Tunas, Cuba.- The management of the EIDE confirmed this, while sports authorities reported that similar measures are being taken at the teaching unit in the municipality of Puerto Padre. The priority is to safeguard families who could be affected by flooding or other effects of the meteorological event.
NATIONAL BASEBALL SERIES SUSPENDED
The National Baseball Commission announced the suspension of the 64th National Series from October 28 to 30. The postponed matches will be made up in the short sub-series scheduled for December 16-21.
The list of affected series includes those between Pinar del Río-Industriales, Isla de la Juventud- Artemisa, Mayabeque-Sancti Spíritus, Cienfuegos-Matanzas, Ciego de Ávila-Holguín, Villa Clara-Camagüey, Las Tunas-Guantánamo, and Granma-Santiago de Cuba.
Earlier, in Santa Clara, Saturday’s game between Leñadores de Las Tunas (Lumberjacks) and Azucareros de Villa Clara (Sugar Workers) was also suspended due to the poor condition of the field at the Augusto César Sandino Stadium following heavy rains on Friday night.
Regarding the All-Star Game, scheduled for November 1 and 2 in Holguín, the National Commission clarified that the final decision will be announced after evaluations following the hurricane.
FOOTBALL ALSO PAUSED
For its part, the Cuban Football Association announced the temporary suspension of the Clausura Tournament of the 108th National League, in response to the "imminent passage" of Hurricane Melissa, which will severely affect the eastern region of the country, where the current phase of the championship is being played in Santiago de Cuba.
The National Commission stated that "the absolute priority of this institution is to guarantee the safety of all people involved." The organization thanked everyone for their understanding and called for responsibility and to follow the guidelines of the Civil Defense. The resumption of the tournament will be announced when conditions permit.
