Las Tunas celebrates Physical Culture and Sports Day with renovated facilities.

Las Tunas will host the main activities for Physical Culture and Sports Day on November 19th for the first time, marking the 40th anniversary of the event. As part of the celebration, more than twenty facilities are undergoing maintenance, and communities are hosting recreational programs.

Las Tunas, Cuba – Hurricane Melissa, although less severe than in other areas, also left its mark on sports centers in the Balcón de Oriente (Cuban Eastern Balcony). One of these was the Leonardo McKenzie Grant multisport hall, which suffered damage to its roof and part of the court. However, the commitment of provincial authorities, in conjunction with new economic stakeholders, ensures its readiness to host the cultural gala for the event on the 18th.

"We've removed approximately 20 square meters of wood and replaced it with cedar. We've also repaired other areas that have deteriorated due to use and the passage of time. We're also working on painting the entire floor," reported Yainier Villavicencio Fernández, a partner in the private company Milenio S.U.R.L., which is in charge of the restoration work.

Villavicencio Fernández praised the commitment of his workers, who remain on the job until late at night due to the tight schedule. He also indicated that they will restore the building's lighting system after decades of operation without proper maintenance.

"The bleachers and fences have undergone complete repair, and the perimeter netting is also being replaced. We'll do the same in the backstop, as well as with the damaged beams. The dugouts have been repaired, each with its own restroom, and new zinc sheets will be installed on the bleacher roof," commented Daniel Concepción Acosta, the technical production director of the entity in charge of the work.

The event program includes a parade of the Cuban Institute of Sports, Physical Education, and Recreation (INDER) flag, accompanied by prominent figures, throughout the Las Tunas municipalities, as well as recreational festivals. Additionally, 47 members of the sports movement will be recognized with the Mártires de Barbados Distinction at the Vicente García Memorial on the eve of November 19th. (ACN)
