The year 2023 was marked by the scarcity of resources and medical supplies, the fluctuation of staff, and other obstacles in the objective and subjective order that complicated the daily life in the largest hospital institution in Las Tunas; even so, the "Guevara" closes the period with significant indexes that guarantee the good performance of vital services for the population.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- Despite the economic tensions during the previous calendar, more than 25,000 patients were admitted to the facility, with a hospital stay of 7.9, a figure that is very close to national forecasts and which is impacted by timely diagnoses and the competence of the doctors.

In the hemodialysis program, despite technical problems, 113 acute renal patients were treated, with an increase of 39 new cases. The performance of this activity stands out for the sensitivity and commitment with which it is undertaken.

Within the Ernesto Guevara General Teaching Hospital, excellent results were obtained in critical maternal care. Dr. Alioski Montero Escala, the first-degree specialist in Intensive and Emergency Care, emphasized that 173 patients were admitted to the intensive care unit, including 38 pregnant women and 135 postpartum women, and thanks to the integrated work, the best results were obtained.

It was a year of hard work," said the assistant professor, "both in terms of human resources and medicines, but quality medical care was guaranteed. An impact indicator that we defended in the care of the serious patient was the lethality in the ventilated patient of more than 48 hours, achieving an outcome close to the country's prognosis".

The doctor acknowledged the commitment of the team to deal with the main complications associated with infectious and hemorrhagic causes. He also spoke of the commitment of the healthcare personnel, beyond their schedules and personal fatigue.

In terms of surgical activity, 16,436 surgeries were performed in a complex scenario. Priority was given to oncological surgeries, as well as trauma and complex cases. The performance of complicated procedures such as tracheal stenosis surgery, an achievement that marks a new chapter in the praxis of the Tunisian hospital, is a testament to its performance.

In 2023, the total maternal mortality rate closed at 6.8, with only one death, which represents a step forward compared to previous periods. There were also 4,147 deliveries, including 4,111 live births. According to specialists in the field, deaths continue to be caused by complications associated with prematurity, sepsis, and congenital malformations.

Representatives of the Maternal and Infant Care Program in the province assured that it is a priority to work intentionally to improve the indicators to guarantee better services for the mother-baby binomial.

Concerning the Assisted Reproduction program, four thousand 766 couples were attended and five pregnancies were celebrated at this stage after artificial insemination. The medical staff involved is an example of perseverance in contributing to the expansion of families who are eagerly looking for a child.
