Cuba Climbs to 19th Place in World Chess Olympiad (f)

Batumi, Georgia-  Cuba rose to the 19th place ON Thursday in the women''s tournament standings list corresponding to the World Chess Olympiad held in this city.

The Cuban team beat Brazil 2.5-1.5 points, in a match in which ties were only produced on the first chess board.

Cuban Yaniet Marrero and Yerisbel Miranda won at the 2nd and 4th boards, and the Brazilian Kathie Goulart did so in the 3rd.

The other Latin American squads that added new victories were Chile and the Dominican Republic, since Chile managed to beat Scotland 2.5-1.5 and the Dominican Republic equalled with Montenegro, respectively.

For their part, Peru fell defeated 1-3 against India, Argentina 0.5-3.5 against Mongolia, Colombia was beaten by France, Venezuela by Australia, Paraguay by Egypt and Guatemala by Greece.

Now Cuba is the only Latin American female team among the top 20, with 14 accumulated points, Peru fell to the 39th place, and then Colombia (41st), Argentina (42nd) and Brazil (45th) are located.
