Early detection of hypertension, diabetes, and other non-communicable diseases (NCDs) is the central focus of the health promotion campaign taking place in Primary Health Care under the slogan “Your vigilance is your protection.”

Las Tunas, Cuba.– The Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Unit, with the support of nursing staff, is coordinating educational activities and screenings as part of the “May Prevention” campaign, a community and institutional initiative that aims to raise awareness about the interconnectedness of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and consolidate prevention as a collective responsibility.

According to updated records, 41 million people die each year from these diseases, which affect individuals of all ages. However, experts emphasize that most are preventable, as they are linked to variable risk factors such as tobacco use, unhealthy diets, physical inactivity, alcohol consumption, and air pollution.

Primary care aims to promote healthy lifestyles and strengthen a culture of prevention against NCDs, given that conditions such as cardiovascular disease, hypertension, obesity, and chronic respiratory and kidney diseases are on the rise.

NCDs can begin in childhood and progress into old age. Therefore, health strategies prioritize health promotion, increasing risk awareness, social well-being, and lifestyle modifications to reduce their incidence.

Health authorities stress that NCDs constitute a sustainable development problem and are a priority on the global health agenda. In this regard, the event seeks to strengthen intersectoral commitment and community participation in their prevention and control.
