The idea that we threaten U.S. national security is insulting and unacceptable said Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, in an interview spread today on the recent tariffs imposed on his country.

Washington.- In dialogue with journalist Chuck Todd, presenter of the program Meet the Press of the U.S. news chain NBC News, the head of government criticized the decision of president Donald Trump to apply tariffs to steel and aluminum imports from its northern neighbor.

One of the things I must admit is that it is difficult to understand this is due to the fact that the president and his administration have decided that Canada and its steel and aluminum are a threat to the national security of the United States, lamented Trudeau.

'Our soldiers fought and died together in the beaches of the Second World War, in the Afghanistan mountains and have been shoulder by shoulder in some of the world's most difficult places, always being there for one another, it is an insult to that', he added.

Also, the Prime Minister rejected the idea that Canadian steel contained in U.S. military vehicles or the aluminum, used in its combat airplanes, in some way represents any threat.

Trump, as part of his crusade against what he calls the unjust trade laws for his country, had announced those tariffs in March, but extended temporary exemptions to several of its allies.

Canada, Mexico and the European Union were among the partners to who he gave momentary relief, but the administration of the Republican president announced this week that from last Friday, they would also be subject to new tariffs, of 25 percent on steel and 10 percent on aluminum.

To justify the action, Trump quoted the Law, Section 232, a regulation rarely invoked that allows to apply those measures to a country in the interest of national security.

In the interview published this Sunday, Trudeau confirmed his nation will establish reciprocal direct tariffs in retaliation.

We will apply the same types of tariffs on steel and aluminum coming from the United States to be directly reciprocal, but we will also apply a series of tariffs on consumption goods, finished products for which Canadians have easy alternatives, he pointed.

One of the truths on tariffs is they increase costs for consumers and, besides that, they hurt U.S. and Canadian workers, considered the Prime Minister.

At the same time, he called the attention on the fact that Trump said to be worried over the commercial deficits that, in the case of Canada, the U.S. has a superavit of two billion dollars in the steel trade. (PL)
