Port of Spain.- According to James Hospedales, Executive Director of the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA), this year the motto of the date is "Healthy Communities: Preserving the Workforce."
This issue is important because most people spend a third of adult life dedicated to work, the official said.
"Our quality of life is closely linked to employment because conditions and the work environment can have a positive or negative impact on health and well-being," he said.
For Hospedales, while workers have responsibility for their own health, employers also have a role to play.
The executive director of CARPHA encouraged entrepreneurs and business owners to prioritize the development of health policies in the workplace, provide a supportive environment and educate their employees on health matters.
On the other hand, he regretted that the Caribbean continues to be the region of the Americas most affected by chronic noncommunicable diseases, which include heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, and chronic respiratory disorders.
The Caribbean Wellness Day is an annual event that has been held since 2008.
The date is aimed at raising awareness, educating the population and establishing health policies in order to improve the prevention of noncommunicable diseases and the quality of life of people in the region. (PL)
