The President of the Government, Pedro Sanchez, called today on his party, the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE), to reverse what he described as indiscriminate social cuts implemented since 2011 by his predecessor, the conservative Mariano Rajoy.

Madrid.- In a ceremony in the city of Oviedo, where he took stock of his 100 days in office, the Social Democratic leader called for the construction of a project inspired by social justice to lay the foundations for the transformation of Spain until 2030.

"Our goal is social justice, and our horizon is 2030," said Sánchez, who reached the government's La Moncloa Palace on June 1 after ousting Rajoy - from the right-wing Popular Party (PP) - through a parliamentary censure motion.

From now until 2020, when general elections must be held, he insisted that his objective is to lay the foundations for the great transformations needed in this European country for the next 12 years, a process that, he suggested, aspire to lead.

In order to carry out these changes, he cited five axes: education, employment, health, the environment and pensions.

Regarding the latter, he pointed out that it will focus on resolving the "hole" left by the previous PP administration in Social Security. "It is possible to have a Social Security with a surplus and decent pensions, and the only political formation that can guarantee it is the PSOE" said the socialist during the event in the capital of the northern region of Asturias.

After calling for the mobilization of the century-old social democratic group with a view to the municipal, regional and European elections in May 2019, he described the scenario in which, in his opinion, Spain came prior to entering La Moncloa.

Sánchez denounced the existence of a Chief Executive (Rajoy) who was not interested in salary inequality; there was a manipulative public television, indiscriminate cuts, parliamentary paralysis and a "toxic association of corruption with politics."

"A hundred days ago, the government resigned and hope arrived, and thanks to this, change is no longer a possibility, but has begun to become a reality," he remarked, after ratifying his determination to recover the welfare state.

Sánchez reviewed the milestones of his mandate of just over three months, as his commitment to feminism: "We are the government of the world with more women in the Council of Ministers of a country," he celebrated.

He also defended the decision to exhume the remains of Dictator Francisco Franco from the Valley of the Fallen Monument.

"After 40 years, it was time to approve a decree law to exhume the dictator," he said amid applause. (PL)
