Major General Ramón Pardo Guerra assessed recovery from heavy rains

Major General Ramón Pardo Guerra, chief of the National Civil Defense Staff, pointed out on Monday the organizational measures for the recovery in the province of Las Tunas, after the heavy rains that hit the eastern country region.

Havana, Cuba.- As reported on Twitter by the Civil Defense, Pardo Guerra carried out a working visit and exchanged with the authorities of the territory, where recovery labor of the damage to homes and other infrastructure began last Sunday.

The Division General evaluated the performance of the Disaster Risk Reduction Management Centers, the early warning points, and the work of radio hams to maintain communications in risk communities.

Pardo Guerra pointed out the importance of preparing the population, and the need to increase the perception of risk, as well as the control and care of vulnerable people.

He insisted on the need to spread the rules of conduct and measures to follow in the event of natural disasters, such as not crossing swollen rivers, not fishing in reservoirs, and not traveling through flooded areas.

According to information published on Sunday, local rainfall records in recent days are more than 300 millimeters, with an average of more than 100.
The Las Tunas dams are, as a whole, at 65 percent of their filling capacity, although two are full and another eight are relieving.

So far, damages have been reported in 429 homes, of which three were completely destroyed and 14 lost their roofs; 1,873 people were evacuated, and the main harm to the electrical service was reported in the communities of Guayabal and Tana, in the municipalities of Amancio and Colombia, respectively.
