Experts will debate in a panel about the need to move towards their own vision regarding the benefits and threats of AI

A conference titled "Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Development" is scheduled to take place at the headquarters of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) in the Chilean capital.

Santiago, Chile.- Government representatives, international entities, academia, and the private sector will participate in the forum, organized by the United Nations and Chile’s National AI Center (CENIA).

According to a statement from ECLAC, the Latin American Artificial Intelligence Index will be presented at the meeting, which collects information on the current situation in three dimensions: Enabling Factors, Research and Development, and Governance. It also reflects the gaps between countries and the best practices adopted by different States and organizations.

Among the speakers at the event are ECLAC Executive Secretary José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs, European Union Cooperation Chief Ewout Sandker, and Chilean Minister of Science Aisén Etcheverry.

Experts will debate in a panel about the need to move towards their own vision regarding the benefits and threats of AI, its link with the digital transformation agendas, and its productive, social, and institutional impact.

According to experts, artificial intelligence is a technology that allows for solving complex problems and improves health, education, the economy, and the environment. However, it can also lead to risks such as the loss of jobs, the manipulation of information, and even the threat to the survival of our species.

To enhance the positive impact of AI and minimize the risks associated with it, it is essential to have reliable information on its practice in the region, which will be fundamental to defining public policies that promote its development, ECLAC said. (PL)
