Workshop to promote local development in Jobabo

The challenges and perspectives in local development, decentralization, and the role of economic actors in the municipal context were the main focus of the exchange between the Doctor of Sciences Carlos César Torres Báez, director of the Center for the Study of Management, Local Development, Tourism, and Cooperativism (CE-GESTA in Spanish) with leaders of the Cuban Communist Party (PCC), the Government, directors of institutions, business entities and cooperatives, and project managers in Jobabo.

This meeting was part of the actions implemented by the IRES Project, which benefits Jobabo and the other two southern municipalities of Las Tunas, to support capacity building, strengthening inter-cooperation as a key tool in the different processes involved in the administrative and financial autonomy of the territories.

Torres Báez emphasized the role of banking institutions in local investments to boost food production, stressing that not enough use is made of the Agricultural Development Fund with favorable interest rates, as well as other types of credits that, if well used, can lead to a linkage with the private sector for access to technologies, resources and inputs needed in the fields.

Workshop to promote local development in JobaboPrecisely, one of the agreements of the meeting was to support the productive processes in the credit and services cooperative (CCS in Spanish) Antonio Fernández, an enclave with potential in various crops and livestock that requires an immediate injection of resources.

When discussing business management, the need for structural changes to be implemented was pondered, so that most of the entities respond directly to the administrative and financial interests of the territory, encouraging the formation of municipal companies from the economic entities that operate here, and new small and medium-sized companies, whose initiatives are in line with the Development Strategy and its focus lines.

Also as part of IRES' support, in alliance with CE-Gesta, for capacity building in Jobabo, PhDs Raysa Capote and Jineht Pérez focused on the design of projects using the Canvas methodology, aimed at business models that include some five local initiatives that favor productive entities in the agricultural, trade and services sectors.
